With the amount of time I commit to browsing social media, I wouldn’t blame people for wondering how I ever get any real work done. Used in the right way, however, these platforms are now an essential component in virtually any company’s marketing toolkit. LinkedIn has clearly carved out its niche from a professional networking perspective, but it was actually Twitter that brought Leeds Business Week to my attention while I just so happened to be based in an office not far from the city.

According to the tweet that caught my eye, Leeds Business Week is the Leeds city region’s annual platform for sharing ideas, building long-lasting business relationships and making things happen. For one week each October, the initiative brings together over 100 speakers to present their ideas, share their knowledge and inspire thousands of delegates at events across the city. I’m always keen to make new professional contacts, both from the translation industry and more widely, so I decided to sign up for the women’s business lunch.

From the fantastic keynote speech to the inspiring women around the room, everyone in attendance had something valuable to share, and I came away feeling so empowered as a relative newbie to entrepreneurial life. It was great to make so many new contacts on an informal basis without feeling any kind of pressure to pitch my services and I’m already looking forward to catching up with some familiar faces at the next event in the diary. Watch this space!
