Let them eat cake!

Anglicus joins in with MacMillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning

A cup of tea and a biscuit never go amiss in the Anglicus office, and with this year’s return of The Great British Bake Off to our screens, we’ve certainly been stepping up our game when it comes to office goodies. Bad days, good days, birthdays, Fridays… we’ll take any excuse to appease a sweet tooth, so when we heard about Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, we jumped at the chance to turn our gourmandise into something more worthwhile.

If you’ve somehow managed to let the high-profile ad campaign pass you by, the Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest annual fundraising event for people facing cancer. The charity asks people all over the UK to host their own get-togethers with donations on the day being made to Macmillan. Last year alone, the charity raised £25 million and this year we thought we’d help them raise even more.

Hosted at our main office in the north west, the Anglicus coffee morning welcomed friends, family and neighbours to put their feet up and indulge in some sweet treats. We even had some sturdy mugs at the ready alongside our fancy china for when the local builders popped in for a “proper brew”. Ever the competitive team, everyone was keen to be crowned (or rather “badged”) Star Baker, but the accolade went unanimously to Peter for his delicious carrot and walnut cake.

With Anglicus matching the amount raised on the morning, our rounded total came to a whopping £150, which will go towards making sure people don’t have to face cancer alone. A huge thank you to everyone who made the event such a success; we hope you’ll be back next year!

DID YOU KNOW?

The German equivalent of a coffee morning is known as Kaffee und Kuchen, Kaffeetrinken, or Kaffeeklatsch. Whilst the tradition seems to be dying out to some extent, it typically takes place in the afternoon between around 15:00 and 17:00, much like a sweet counterpart to afternoon tea.

In France, it’s the kids who seem to enjoy all the fun! Le goûter is the traditional afternoon snack served almost religiously between 16:00 and 16:30 after school, and typically involves a crêpe (with Nutella, of course!), a fruit compote or some kind of madeleine sponge cake.
